1. Wash the Brick

Cleaning Brick

Washing the brick will help ensure that paint will properly adhere to your fireplace. Start by using the TSP and scrub brush to wash the brick and grout, thoroughly removing any soot and dirt. Rinse with clean water and let dry. If the brick is already painted, clean and repair any chipping, damaged, or blistering areas.

2. Mask Around the Fireplace

Painter's Tape

Painter’s tape will help eliminate small errors, giving your fireplace a cleaner, more finished look. Take the tape and mask the walls, cabinets, or doors around the fireplace. Cover the mantel with cardboard or kraft paper for protection. You can also use a drop cloth to protect the floor from any messes.

3. Mix the Paint

Once you have finished prepping your fireplace, it’s time to get your whitewash ready. To start, pour equal parts of paint and water into a mixing container and combine until you get an even consistency. Start with less paint and more water; you can always add more paint or layers as you go.

4. Apply Whitewash

Once your paint is mixed, you’re ready to apply the whitewash! First, you’ll want to use a spray bottle filled with water to wet the brick down in small areas lightly. The brick should be moist but not dripping wet. While the bricks are still damp, wear latex gloves to take the cotton cloth and dip it into the bucket of paint mixture. Lightly wipe the brick with the cotton cloth and use the sash brush to paint the mortar and hard-to-reach places. Repeat this step until all bricks are painted.

5. Let Dry

You’re just about done! Check the manufacturer’s instructions to make sure your whitewash is properly dried. Once dry, you should wait at least 24 hours before using the fireplace.
